Passport photo rejections are rarely about the photo looking bad. They are about millimetres. Every authority publishes a print size and a required head height within it, and the head height is the one people get wrong — a correctly sized photo with the face too small or too large is rejected just as firmly as one that is the wrong shape.
Ten specifications are built in, each with its own dimensions and head height:
Indian passport photographs follow ICAO Doc 9303, mandatory since 1 September 2025: head height 32–36 mm, plain white background, neutral expression, both eyes open and clearly visible.
Everything is rendered at 600 DPI, which is well above what any photo printer or upload portal requires and leaves headroom for printing a sheet at home.

Face detection locates your head in the uploaded photo and positions the crop so the head height matches the chosen specification. This is the step that turns "roughly the right size" into "the right size", and it is the one that most often decides whether a photo is accepted.
Background replacement separates you from whatever is behind you and composites the result onto the plain colour the specification calls for. That means you do not need a white wall, a studio, or a photographer — a photo taken in a normal room works, and the wall, door frame or bookshelf behind you is removed. Edges around hair are handled with soft blending rather than a hard cut-out, which is what stops the result looking pasted together.
Both models are downloaded once and cached, then run entirely on your device. Nothing about your face is transmitted anywhere, which is a meaningful difference from services that upload your photograph to process it.
For a physical print, most photo services and self-service kiosks accept an uploaded image and will print at the exact size. At home, place several copies on a 4 × 6 inch sheet in any photo application and print on photo paper at actual size — never "fit to page", which rescales and quietly breaks the dimensions the whole exercise was about.
For an online application, upload the downloaded file directly. If a portal imposes a maximum file size, Image to PDF followed by Compress PDF gets it down when a PDF is accepted, and most photo portals also accept a resized JPG.

Technically yes, as long as your face is large enough and sharp — cropping into a small face in a group photo produces a soft result that gets rejected. Most authorities also require a recent photograph, typically within the last six months. A fresh photo taken on a modern phone is nearly always the better starting point.
